    Dr. Katarina “Trina” Bennett
    of Bluepearl Sarasota

    TOPIC:
    General parrot anatomy and husbandry
             &
and touching on some signs of illness

Dr. Katarina “Trina” Bennett hails from Halifax, Nova Scotia in Canada.
Before attending veterinary school, she already knew that Exotic animals were her calling; particularly after volunteer work with wildlife and an internship spent at the Smithsonian Conservation and Research Center in Washington where she got to work with elephants!

She attended the Atlantic Veterinary School on Prince Edward Island and graduated in 2012 with honors. During vet school she focused on training with exotics and wildlife by pursuing internships and placements including the National Aviary in Pittsburgh, the Wildlife Center of Virginia and the Pittsburgh Zoo & PPG Aquarium.
To continue with a formal education, she applied for internships following graduation and matched with the Western College of Veterinary Medicine (WCVM) for a Zoo, Exotics and Wildlife Internship.

After a great learning experience during her internship year she stayed on at the WCVM as a Clinical Associate, helping to train veterinary students and further her knowledge.

For the past 2 years she has also been completing a residency in Exotic Companion Animals, and will be sitting the Board Examination in the coming year.

Dr. Bennett has joined the Bluepearl team in Sarasota and is excited to see all the avian & exotics Florida has to offer!

    TOPIC:
"Unique Adaptations of Owls“Invasive Species and their Impact”
          &
“Rodenticides, and their Promiscuous Use and Impact on the Environment.”

No ecosystem has been more impacted by invasive plant and animal species than has Florida. In this presentation, Dr. Sadkin will explain the distinction between exotic” and “invasive” species, and the relationship of each to environmental impact.
Parrots, for example, were considered “exotic” until enough escaped to the wild for some to become “invasive.”) Exotic and invasive species can be benign or harmful. In addition, various plant and animal species are interconnected in complex, often harmful, and sometimes not fully understood ways.
This talk will be combined with a presentation on “Rodenticides, and their Promiscuous Use and Impact on the Environment.”
One of the “residents” at Wildlife Inc. is a great horned owl that is an example of direct impact, and the barn owl as a species is also impacted. But so are humans, often to a shocking degree.

David Sadkin, Ph.D. is Volunteer Director of Education Services for Wildlife, Inc. Center for Education and Rehabilitation, located in Bradenton Beach, Florida.

Gloria Schroek wrote on the FWCAS Facebook page “There are lots of rescue birds who need toys!"
We have plenty of supplies but we also could use: straws, playing cards with 1/2 inch holes drilled through the center, old phone books with 1/2 inch holes drilled near the upper left hand corner, toilet paper and paper towel rolls.
Please bring some of the items named above and your enthusiasm to the meeting!

The camera follows a regal fal-con as it joins men in a hunt; a storm of birds bringing a monsoon to a drought-ridden Indian village; a hummingbird as it commutes 5,000 miles; and a barn owl attacking rats in the dark.
CHOICE #2 — NATURE Program "Parrots: Look Who’s Talking"
This fun, visually rich special profiles parrots, showing how these intelligent, remarkably affectionate, often shameless attention-seekers man-age to thrive in both the wild and our homes.
